Let’s talk plainly.
A lot of people are suddenly very upset about individual people using AI. Everyday people using it the way they once used Google, spellcheck, Grammarly, Canva templates, YouTube tutorials, calculators, voice notes, or that one cousin who knows how to fix a résumé. 😅
And yes, some of the concern is real. AI can be used badly. Those concerns are not imaginary. They deserve serious attention.
But here is the part that keeps tapping me on the shoulder like, “Now wait a minute.”
The outrage against individual AI users may be new, but the use of AI-like systems is not new at all. The public argument is late. Tardy. Pulling into the driveway after the party ended, holding a casserole and acting like it helped cook. 🍲
For decades, machine learning, predictive analytics, recommendation engines, scoring models, fraud detection systems, automated filters, and algorithmic decision tools have been humming quietly in the background of modern life. They were in the bank. They were in the insurance quote. They were in the shopping recommendation. They were in the job screening system. They were in the ad you saw before you even said out loud what you wanted.
Now that individuals have access to visible tools like chatbots, image generators, transcription tools, and writing assistants, the moral spotlight has suddenly swung toward the person at the kitchen table trying to get through their workload.

That visibility changed everything.
Before that, most people were not arguing at the dinner table about “machine learning.” The phrase sounded like something locked inside a university lab or buried in a corporate slide deck. But the systems were already making decisions and shaping behavior. Banks and financial companies have used automated systems for fraud detection, credit scoring, risk modeling, and transaction monitoring for years. Regulators have been talking about algorithmic decision-making in credit, housing, employment, and consumer reporting long before the average person had a chatbot on their phone. The one example of how these systems are already embedded in high-stakes areas like hiring and worker evaluation.
So when someone says, “People are using AI now,” the honest reply is: institutions have been using it. The individual user is not the beginning of the story. The individual user is just a part of the story everyone can finally see. 👀
The Machine Was Quiet When It Benefited Institutions
Some people were quiet when it was solely benefiting the haves.
When machine learning worked behind the curtain for corporations, it was often called “innovation.” “Optimization.” “Personalization.” “Risk management.” “Efficiency.” “Digital transformation.”
When an individual uses AI to write a better email, organize research, or brainstorm a small business idea, suddenly it becomes a moral referendum on their character. Are they lazy? Are they cheating? Are they authentic? Are they replacing human creativity?
That shift is worth noticing.
McKinsey’s 2025 global AI survey found that 88% of organizations reported regular AI use in at least one business function, up from 78% the year before, and 71% reported regular generative AI use in at least one business function. Meanwhile, the public is anxious, and not without reason. Pew Research Center has found that Americans are far more concerned than excited about increased AI use in daily life, with many worrying about creativity, relationships, privacy, jobs, and control. At the same time, people are more open to AI in data-heavy tasks like weather forecasting, medicine, and fraud detection.
That split tells us something important: people are not simply anti-technology. They are trying to figure out where AI belongs, who controls it, and what it costs.
The problem is that the anger often lands on the most visible and least powerful user.
You Are Not the Largest User. You Are Just Near The Concerned People.
This is where we want to slow the room down.
The everyday person using AI is usually not the largest user of AI. They are just in close proximity to the people most vocal ……now. Not when we were alerted about it many years ago.
You use AI to draft a newsletter. A bank uses AI-adjacent systems to score risk.
You use AI to summarize meeting notes. A corporation uses AI to analyze customer behavior across millions of people.
You use AI to create a first draft. A platform uses algorithms to decide what people see, buy, believe, and click.
You use AI to make your workflow survivable. An employer may use algorithmic tools to rank applicants before a human ever reads their name.
That is not the same scale. That is not the same power. That is not the same consequence.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology created its AI Risk Management Framework because AI systems can carry serious risks around reliability, safety, fairness, accountability, privacy, and transparency. That framework is focused on organizations, systems, deployment, and risk management. Not just the everyday person using a tool to get through a task. 😌

The Old AI Had Better Branding
Part of the confusion comes from language. We did not always call these systems “AI.”
Sometimes we call them algorithms (which run social media, recommendations for movies you might like, books you might like…) Sometimes predictive analytics. Sometimes automation. Sometimes personalization. Sometimes, fraud detection. Sometimes recommender systems. Sometimes scoring models. Sometimes optimization.
The name changed, but the logic was familiar: collect data, find patterns, make predictions, influence decisions.

It was already woven into search, translation, maps, ads, spam detection, photo tools, and recommendations. We were all living with machine learning long before we started debating whether an individual should use it to draft a paragraph.

Let’s imagine two people.
Maya is applying for jobs. She uses AI to clean up her résumé, tailor her cover letter, and practice interview questions. She still brings her experience, her judgment, her work history, and her voice. AI helps her frame it.
On the other side, the employer uses software to scan hundreds or thousands of applications. It may rank candidates, search for keywords, screen out gaps, flag background information, or use third-party data products. The applicant is told to be authentic, but the system reviewing her may be automated before any human being meets her.
Now, who has more power in that exchange?
Maya using AI to polish a document is not the same as a company using algorithmic systems to sort people’s futures. That does not turn every individual use into something harmless, and it does not make every institutional use harmful. But it does expose the imbalance.
The CFPB has warned employers about algorithmic scores and background dossiers because these tools can carry legal and practical consequences for real people. That is the kind of issue that deserves more public heat.
The Public Concern Is Real, But It Needs Better Aim
I do not think people are wrong to feel uneasy. I feel uneasy too sometimes. There is something strange about watching tools move into spaces that used to feel private, human, handmade, or sacred. Writing. Art. Voice. Memory. Grief. Love. Teaching. Organizing. Culture. Faith. Friendship.
There is a nervous feeling in the air, like people can hear a storm before the sky changes. 🌩️
Pew has found that many Americans want more control over how AI is used in their lives, and that desire makes sense. People are tired of being experimented on without consent. They are tired of systems they cannot see making decisions they cannot appeal. They are tired of platforms turning human attention into a harvest field. 🌾
But that is exactly why the conversation should not scold individual users.
If the concern is exploitation, the business model matters.
If the concern is bias, the data and deployment matter.
If the concern is job loss, executive decisions matter.
If the concern is misinformation, platform incentives matter.
If the concern is cultural theft, training data, ownership, compensation, and consent matter.
If the concern is authenticity, it is worth remembering that many forms of invisible help have always existed: editors, consultants, interns, templates, assistants, ghostwriters, managers, agencies, schedulers, and teams.
Some people have staff. Some people have software. Some people have both. Some people have neither and are trying to survive.
The Double Standard Is Hard to Miss
There is a strange social pattern here.
When a corporation uses AI to generate an employee newsletter, it is called internal communications modernization. When an individual uses AI to write a public note, they are reminded to treat it as ‘only a draft,’ as if the adult at the keyboard suddenly needs a hall monitor.
When a corporation automates, it is called modernization.
When a platform predicts behavior, it is called personalization.
When a bank scores risk, it is called responsible lending.
When an employer screens applicants with software, it is called efficiency.
But when an individual uses AI to make a hard day easier, suddenly everyone becomes a philosopher of authenticity. 😅
That does not mean all criticism is bad faith. Some criticism is thoughtful. Some of it comes from artists, workers, teachers, and communities who have seen technology used against them before. That deserves respect.
But some of the outrage also reflects control. People often want to manage the choices of others while ignoring the larger machinery shaping all of us. It is easier to scold the visible person than confront the invisible system. It is easier to point at the neighbor’s faucet than ask who owns the water plant.
That is where the conversation gets misdirected.
The Future Conversation Needs More Honesty
The Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI’s shows that many Americans expect AI to reduce jobs over the next 20 years, even as experts expect generative AI to assist a large share of work hours by 2030. That gap between public fear and expert expectation is exactly where distrust grows.
People can feel the ground moving. They may not know every technical term, but they can sense that decisions are being made above them. They can sense that tools are arriving faster than protections. They can sense that ordinary workers will be told to adapt while powerful institutions decide the terms.
So yes, let’s have the AI conversation. But let’s have the real one.
Conclusion: Aim Higher, Think Clearer, Follow the Power 🌍
The outrage against individual AI user is often incomplete. It arrived late, and sometimes it aims too low.
Machine learning was already humming in the background. Algorithms were already recommending, ranking, scoring, filtering, approving, denying, predicting, and nudging. The largest users were not the everyday people trying to write faster or organize their lives. The largest users were industries with money, data, infrastructure, and power.
The individual user is not the main engine.
That is the part worth sitting with.
So maybe the next phase of the conversation needs less finger-pointing and more honesty. Less panic about the person using a tool and more scrutiny of the institutions building systems around us. Less moral performance and more attention to power.
Because those people aren’t rejecting algorithms that make their point visible to the masses on social media. That’s how hundreds or thousands of us now have the privilege of knowing what is on your mind. They aren’t rejecting book, movie, music, and other media recommendations that just seem to magically appear. They aren’t rejecting the technology that protects their accounts. And all of this has been using data centers and water for quite a while now. ‘Team Haves’ has some reflecting to do. Like fans in the bleachers at a game, now that another team has its hands on the ball, you’re loud.
Because here is the truth: the tools are already here, and many of the largest players have been using earlier versions of them for years.
The question is not whether the machine suddenly appeared. It did not.
If AI has been gradually inching into everything for years, then we have all been using it. The question is why so many people only started yelling only at their fellow citizens once ordinary individuals could touch the controls.
